The nights were stifling in the forest. Rhin and Elania took turns keeping watch for a sleep cycle apiece. Of course, Rhin had a longer sleep cycle than the young elf woman did, but she didn’t mind. She looked down at the sleeping human and felt a pang of confusion hit her heart. She glanced down at the ring glittering on her finger. It was a ghost of her past that she couldn’t seem to get rid of. Her mind began to wander, and she let her thoughts fill her essence. Why was she beginning to have the same feelings for Rhin as she once did for Rotheon? She hardly knew the human. Was it because she felt guilty? She didn’t know. She knew one thing for certain – she needed to take care of this human until he got control over his powers as a Dragoon.

Elania shifted so that she was sitting next to the sleeping human. They did the best they could to make a comfortable bed in the forest, but it was difficult considering they had no time to prepare. She hesitantly reached out and brushed Rhin’s bangs from his face. He was handsome for a human, she would admit, but she decided she needed to reign in her feelings. The last thing she wanted was for him to get hurt because she couldn’t control her emotions.

Suddenly, she froze. She could feel eyes on her, and fear began to quell in her heart. It wasn’t that she was afraid for herself; she was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to protect Rhin. The wind whispered things that she could not decipher, and she felt a warm sensation drape across her shoulders.

Elania, do not fear. Do not falter. You have more friends than you think. The voice whispered in her ear and she snapped her head to the side. She had seen this figure before, but it had never spoken to her. The voice was powerful, almost too much for her mind to take. It was loud, but not overbearing. It commanded her attention. When her eyes focused in the darkness, she saw the figure of a translucent dragon. He sat, waiting for her to calm.

Do you know who I am, child? He asked of her, mouth not moving.

“You…are the Divine Dragon,” she whispered in awe. She moved forward, reaching up a hand to try and pet the dragon.

I wouldn’t advise that, child. He said with a breathy laugh. She paused, cocking her head to the side.

“Why?” she asked.

I am not corporeal. As the Divine Dragon, I am split into three beings. What you see now is my spirit. My physical form is sealed away along with the other dragons, and will only return at the appointed time. My power is mine alone, though I have sealed some of it in my crystal – a shard of which hangs around your neck. I still continue to watch over this realm, and have chosen you to bear my crystal.
